Walsingham House

We provided advice on all aspects of Rights of light for the redevelopment of Walsingham House.

The existing building was originally constructed in 1929 to a design by Howard Souster.

The building in the heart of the City of London is situated opposite the Grade I listed St Olave’s Church, near the Tower of London.

The site falls within an area protected by the GLA’s London View Management Framework. This protects views from the north bastion of Tower Bridge towards the Tower of London. Careful consideration of the proposed massing was required to ensure the proposals remained within the constraints of the protected view.

The interior of the building was demolished, with the Portland stone façade being retained. New piled foundations were created to enable the construction of a steel frame structure. Two additional floors were added to the existing eight storey building, nearly doubling the internal office space to 65,000 sqft.

The retained façade was cleaned and restored. To achieve a targeted BREEAM Excellent rating, ISG upgraded the glazing with high-performance units sympathetic to the original art deco window designs. The two additional floors feature curtain walling and contemporary Portland stone cladding.
